Project

Bio-nanotech Research and Innovation Tower (BRIT) - Creating bridges between University, large undertakings and SMEs

Code PONa3_00136

The BRIT project is a research and innovation laboratory focused on biotechnology and nanotechnology for the care, treatment and prevention of chronic degenerative diseases.

The Biological Towers, and the BRIT project overall, represent one of the most important scientific investments of the University of Catania in recent years, through which it achieves significant aggregations of research groups in order to create a network of excellence. The project involves in its first stage the design and construction of the building works and technological systems for the property that will host the BRIT, the purchase of equipment and necessary scientific tools for research activities in the centre, and the implementation of specific training activities.

The training, which is central to the project, refers to three axes : TO1 (roles of research management) , TO2 (technical and commercial roles) , TO3 (Research positions). The differentiation of training objectives is based on the idea that research cannot be the end in itself, but that it must be transferred given the support of companies that want to innovate.

The BRIT project has two strategic objectives: A. to increase the operating standards, attractiveness and competitiveness of scientific facilities of the University operating in one of the sectors with the greatest impact in terms of socio-economic development , which is that of nano-biotechnology, B. respond to the innovation requirements expressed by the territory and by companies, offering expertise and services capable of creating new growth opportunities for the region, and of increasing its attractiveness and competitiveness.

BRIT will be open to scientific collaborations that the University already has underway with numerous national and international research centres. It aims to create the basic conditions for further development of these relationships. The centre will serve as an operational tool for the implementation of strategic research programs of the principals of advanced technology to which the University is committed, in its larger public-private partnerships, and through the activities of technology transfer in the area of nano- biotechnology, including through the support of secondary research findings.
