S2-Move proposes a new concept of smart mobility which allows citizens tomove better to live better. The idea is to create a network of citizens who, by making use of ICT technology, can exchange data and information to make effective decisions in a more aware manner.
S2-Move is a modular platform which allows the acquisition, memorisation and processing of information originating from the urban fabric thanks also to the use of smart devices made available by the ICT world. In this way, it is as much a smartphone as an intelligent control unit mounted on board a vehicle, and it can create a collaborative network among people, cars and systems of management of public and private transport through which information related to mobility flows and citizens become at the same time providers and users.
Through the most modern wireless communication technologies, the automobiles can interact among themselves creating a true network of floats of automobiles in movement with which users can come into contact through a simple and innovative annotated geographical map. Each entity of the S2-Move world is therefore capable of making decisions in full autonomy but with an information base already defined and distributed among the agents of the system. The S2-Move citizen ever more 'informed' and 'connected' becomes thus an active subject of mobility.
The S2-Move platform in its current state is capable of tracing information from the urban fabric, sent through smartphones, tablets and smart data acquisition devices on board vehicles. The devices on board are capable of interfacing with the different electronic control units which make up the vehicle monitoring in such a way its functioning status. All the information collected is memorised within a remote database and structured in such a way as to be able to be process and return the information to the citizen in the form of services. All information saved in the database is referenced by geographical information which expresses the exact position and by a time stamp of the instant of acquisition. In this way, by using geographical coordinates which follow the standard systems of reference, all information has spatial and temporal valence. The accumulated information is found in primordial condition and, before being able to be used, it is necessary to process it appropriately.
To this aim, the functional modules are defined which carry out the information processing:
- "Traffic Monitoring" Module
- "Fleet Management" Module
- "Smart Parking" Module
- "Warning Management" Module
The "Traffic Monitoring" module is concerned with the evaluation of traffic on urban roads: through an innovative process, achieved starting from an analysis of the scientific literature, an estimation of the traffic present on a specific street segment is carried out, without the use of telecameras or particular sensors positioned statically in the field, but managing the information provided by the vehicles monitored. In the same way, the S2-Move platform is capable of visualising on the map the information from individual automobiles which decide to create a fleet through the "Fleet Management" module. Through this module it is therefore possible to visualise on an annotated map the various indicators related to the automobile in movement, reporting diverse information including speed, fuel consumption, etc. With regard to the "Smart Parking" module, based on the traffic condition and the position of the user, it allows the driver/citizen to choose and book a parking spot, defined as "better" according to the intelligent evaluation of a series of indicators, reachable from a particular point in the city. Finally, the "Warning Management" module concerns the management of signals sent by the user, such as for example the presence of traffic, potholes, and anomalous conditions in general.
One year from the completion of the project, the communication techniques among the various vehicles are to be finalised and the processes reported above optimised, with the aim of integrating the various components in a homogeneous manner and being able to give the go-ahead to a comprehensive test phase which will begin in the next few months.
