PROGETTO ENERGY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Code PON04a3_00470

The aim of the research activity connected with the EMS (Energy Management System) project is to create a Micro Smart Grid system of the whole, self-sufficient in energy terms, thanks to the balanced use of installations for the production of electrical, thermal and renewable energy, which manages to adapt to varying conditions of the consumption of utilities, through algorithms of energy needs prediction based on historical information which the system stores and processes over time.

In reality, the efficiency of an installation is closely tied to its management and use, indeed the management phase includes the creation of measures of improvement of energy efficiency and the subsequent management of the buildings, with distribution of services and actions which can guarantee the predetermined objectives of energy saving, for a duration equal at least to the time necessary to recover the investment. In order to reach improvement of the energy efficiency of the buildings, it is useful to launch a system of consumption monitoring, which places consumption for instrumental use under observation. The preparation of a package of measures to improve the efficiency of a building is facilitated if a long historical series of energy consumption is available, even better if one can distinguish between consumption attributable to production activities of the users and that required by the building to ensure the desired levels of comfort.

The "ENERGY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM" falls within the field of the issue of improving energy efficiency in the convergence area (Puglia region). This social innovation project intends to contribute to the scientific and technological development of integrated systems for intelligently monitoring and managing buildings with the aim of improving their energy performance based on the demands of usage and particular energy-environmental conditions. The EMS will be a hardware-software system capable of managing the whole installation servicing the buildings and, through an algorithm of managing historical information and predicting energy needs estimated based on this, it will be capable of optimising the functioning of the same installation. The EMS system will be capable of optimising the functioning and consumption of all thermal, refrigeration or electrical energy distribution equipment in order to reduce wastage and improve the efficiency of buildings.

Through a series of measuring devices in the field, it will best manage the installation system with which the property unit is equipped, and thanks to a system of "learning" and recording of information it will be capable of creating a historical archive within itself regarding consumption. Based on this historical archive the EMS will manage to activate the parts of the installation in such a way as and within the time necessary to satisfy the energy requirements of the building's usage at different times of year, avoiding wastage. Thanks to the monitoring and storage of information from Grid sensors, the EMS predicts the building's energy habits, with the application of algorithms of prediction and optimises the system's provision of services in terms of consumption.

Pilot Installation of EMS project in the District of Panni (FG)

The aim is to create an efficient management system of a Smart Grid, through the function of self-adaptation to the energy conditions permitted by innovative algorithms of prediction of the users' habits. SmartGrid is an electrical network capable of intelligently integrating the actions of all the users connected - producers, consumers, or prosumers - in order to distribute energy efficiently, sustainably, economically advantageously, and safely.

Pilot installation configuration

The pilot installation in the District of Panni (FG) is made up of a prefabricated structure, equipped with various installation systems.

  • Photovoltaic installation;
  • Mini-wind installation;
  • Thermal solar installation;
  • Heat pump;
  • Internal fancoils for air-conditioning;
  • Electric light installation;
  • Electric FM installation;
  • Anti-intruder and alarm installation;

EMS features

The main features of the EMS system are the following:

  • Instantaneous monitoring of consumption;
  • Automatic intelligent management of the installation;
  • Prediction of energy needs;
  • Self-adaptation to users' energy habits;
  • On-site and remote user-friendly cross-platform management interface.
