Project

AD-PERSONAS: A Customizable Distributed Platform based on Body Sensor Networks for Pervasive and Continuous Monitoring of Assisted Livings

Code PON04a3_00238

The aim of the project is to develop an open platform for the continuous monitoring of vital signs of the beneficiary.

In particular, the project includes the development of:

  • i) multi-layered, distributed software architecture for efficient management of applications based on heterogeneous BSN networks,
  • ii) energy efficient algorithms that recognise postures/movements and monitor vital parameters,
  • iii)  a biomedical system distributed within Cloud Computing for remote, daily monitoring of patients with or at high risk of serious diseases.

AD-PERSONAS can offer benefits to health authorities as well as patients: being able to monitor certain categories of patients remotely and continuously (via a wearable, non-invasive technology), saves economic and human resources, and improves comfort.

Fifteen months after the launch of project activities, significant results have already been achieved. From a technological point of view, AD-PERSONAS completed the first prototype of the multi-layered software platform, which is currently under experimentation. The platform consists of three macro levels of software in operation, respectively, in specific programmable and wearable sensors, on personal mobile devices (smartphones and tablets), and on a cloud server. The research led to the definition and realisation of two "power-aware" algorithms based on accelerometric signals from wearable wireless sensors, which allow real-time monitoring of human movement and physical activity.

The primary expected results of the project include the definition and implementation of algorithms for the continuous and non-invasive monitoring of cardiac activity (including the survey of the fundamental psycho-physiological mechanism known as "fight-or-flight") and the creation of two test cases (applications) of the AD-PERSONAS platform for monitoring patients in motion (actions and cardiac activity).
