SMART TUNNEL

The objective of the SMART TUNNEL project is the development of technologies for the control and rationalisation of mercantile and passenger ship traffic in port areas, the movement and management of containers and the movement and management of auto-vessels.

To this aim, the project concentrates on creating a modular technological platform of support to port logistical branches and of road transport of goods based on the integration of IT technologies and innovative communication systems.

The study, analysis and prototypical development of a system of intelligent, open and scalable services for optimal management of logistical nodes (from port logistical nodes to urban nodes), will allow the government of modality, structure and time of goods transport in port, retroport and urban areas, removing the bureaucratic and structural inefficiencies of the interconnections, and improving the level of efficiency and sustainability of the urban transport of goods.

The project is characterised by the integration of IT technologies and innovative communication systems, with the aim of offering higher levels of information and operational efficiency to the activities of the players involved, and a greater capacity for socio-environmental sustainability.  Smart Tunnel is made up of the following partners:

Smart Tunnel focuses on supporting processes of:

  • Smart Port Regionalisation: development and testing of a modular system aimed at improving the integration of the logistical chain in maritime transport; optimisation of efficiency and safety in port-retroport-inland terminal corridors to encourage processes of port regionalisation and increase the competitiveness of the regional logistical and intermodal system with regard to environmental protection, the safeguarding of human life in the sea and and the improvement of working conditions in the port logistics sector.
  • Smart Urban Freight Transport: development and testing of a scalable modular system able to be integrated and aimed at improving the integration of the logistical chain in urban transport of goods, by making available operational models for the network design of land-side transport activities; application of Intelligent Transport System tools for the management of the flow of goods and vehicular fleets, as well as for route planning.

The project focuses on allowing, at both the local and national levels, the introduction of technologies which can significantly influence:
