Description The aim of the project is the development of innovative fabrication processes of newly designed complex titanium components for the aeronautical industry, using fibre Laser Beam Welding (LBW) to obtain near net shape components in order to reduce the buy-to-fly ratio. The project includes 6 objectives to be achieved through 16 subtasks. Each of the partners will be responsible for performing the activities and *maintaining the coordination for the specific technical area of competence. More specifically: • The CALEF Consortium will operate through the members listed below, each of which will perform the following actions - Alenia Aeronautica SpA will mainly perform activities of coordination, design, testing and cost/benefits assessment - RTM SpA will be mainly involved in the design and fabrication of a prototype welding station and will contribute to the definition and setting up of welding process parameters - Politecnico di Bari will mainly develop activities of modeling and mechanical characterization - LASIT SpA will mainly follow the activities for the design and fabrication of components and specific tools for the experimental laser welding station - Boeing Operation International Inc will mainly contribute to the coordination of project activities and support the design of welded components - ENEA will mainly perform activities of process parameters set up and welded joints characterization - APR Srl will mainly perform activities for the design and fabrication of components and specific tools for welding titanium components • Università di Napoli will mainly carry out testing activities • Centro Sviluppo Materiali will mainly perform testing activities and the assessment of residual stresses generated during the welding process In addition, Alenia Improvement will operate as a consultant for the fabrication and testing of subcomponents. The Politecnico di Milano will act as a consultant for the following specific subjects: ¿ The TOC monitoring device embedded in the fibre laser source ¿ Coaxial monitoring device located in the welding head The project will include both analytical and experimental activities to support the design and fabrication phases of components and the welding system. In fact there is a need to develop methodologies, machines and tools to support specific application requirements. The whole project will be structured in the following phases: • Conception and definition of component fabrication specifications • Design and fabrication of welding machine/equipment based on fiber laser technology • Experimental testing • Analysis and assessment of the project results both from the technical standpoint and the economical advantages associated with its industrial exploitation in the aeronautical field. One of the most qualifying objectives is the chance for Southern Italy to acquire scientific-technical competence in titanium laser welding that will give the area a prominent position on a national and international level. This acquisition of know how will parallel that achievable with other projects in a constellation (i.e. Friction Stir Welding and Hot Precision Forming) for manufacturing titanium components for aeronautical applications. These different projects are complementary to each other from the technological standpoint and for their applicability to different parts of the structure of aeroplanes.
