PEGASO

Code PON01_02889
Field/s Cultural goods and services
Description Goal of this project is to acquire and develop an ensemble of know-how and competences leading to the production of a prototype of a system, for space applications, for high speed data transfer from satellite payload to ground. Key technologies will be investigated in order to exceed the present limits to develop a high speed Payload Data Transmission unit. This will enable proposing partners to get a competitive advantage, allowing ASI and Italian and European scientific communities to arrange innovative missions and take on board instruments able to collect and manage an high quantity of data in a greater measure. Important and innovative aspects of the project will be as follows: • Implementation of a new protocol for high speed data transfer (>1 Gbit/s) in accordance to new ESA standard still to be defined • Use of new memory technologies, with high capacity, resistant to radiations and with low energy consumption • Study of a modular architecture able to fit the requirements of different future missions, by allowing an increase of capabilities and adaptation of the interfaces to new instruments. • Development of new technologies for high speed data transfer from satellite and with low energy consumption. The achievement of the goals of the project will allow a more considerable improvement in terms of performances compared with present state of the art. In particular, the greater capability of data storage will enable future missions to allocate a larger number of instruments, to acquire images with a higher resolution or to survey a wider area with an equal resolution. The techniques of modular architecture to be studied and developed will allow to fit the unit to different mission requirements, by permitting to optimize the project in terms of costs, weight and power consumption. Use of non volatile memories, able to keep the information without power consumption will be studied. This will enable a decrease of power necessary to have the storage system working with a reduction of sizes of solar panels and battery. Pointing antenna will be studied in order to get high EIRP values without requiring high RF power with a consequent greater reduction of transmitters consumption. PEGASO will allow to follow the evolution of sensors used for earth observation and to manage the acquisition of a quantity of data in a greater measure: optical sensors with higher and higher resolutions together with sensors able to acquire a larger number of bands, by realizing what in literature is called hyperspectral remote sensing. With the development of new hyperspectral sensors with high spectral resolution (with band width in the order of 0,01¿m) it will be possible to recognize the absorption peaks of a greater number of elements allowing, for instance, to perform a monitoring, in terms of quality and quantity, of the pollution agents in the air. With the use of pointing antenna on board of the satellite there will be greater possibilities of reusing the available frequencies thanks to smaller requirement of band and lower interference among different existing and future missions. A transmission band will be studied by investigating also the possibility of evolution towards a band different than X. Different ways of data compression will be evaluated and also cryptographic methods to adopt in order to grant the confidentiality of data transmitted on RF link to avoid an unauthorized use of images. Furthermore, problems related to functioning of system in environment under radiation will be studied.
