Description	The TESSA project will develop a set of products and services for Situational Sea Awareness (SSA) based on new operational oceanography environmental data integrated into advanced technological platforms for use by end users in the maritime sector, tourism and environmental protection. The costs derived from the loss of Situational Sea Awareness are estimated to be growing, and to be around 500 million dollars a year (The International Maritime Human Element Bulletin. The Nautical Institute, October 2003(1): 3). Furthermore, Europe and Italy are required to implement the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MFSD) and reach a ‘good’ environmental status for the marine domain, including deep areas above the continental shelf, before 2020. Over the last few years, marine weather forecasts (operational oceanography) have begun to make marine environmental data available at a resolution and accuracy hitherto unknown. This project proposes to develop operational oceanography capabilities in the regions of southern Italy and integrate them with advanced technological solutions for the dissemination of sea state information (waves, currents, temperature and salinity). Both products and services will therefore be developed dedicated to transport safety at sea, pleasure boating and environmental protection. This project is innovative in how it will set up advanced oceanographic modelling tools for marine areas and ports of southern Italy, and develop hardware, middleware and software for real-time data dissemination as well as intelligent decision support systems for project end users. We believe that the prototypes of technological platforms for dissemination foreseen for this project may be of commercial interest. The project will see the participation of research organizations (CMCC and CNR-IAMC) expert in the field of operational oceanography and participants in the construction of the European marine forecasting systems for the Mediterranean Sea. In this project, they will develop specific operational oceanography competences in the southern Italian Seas. These competences will be made available to LINKS SpA for developing industrial prototypes for data dissemination and support services for a better Situational Sea Awareness for certain primary transport and environmental protection sectors. The collaboration between the industrial and scientific sectors arising from this project may be rolled out in the future to other end-user sectors.
