Description The Project aims to: 1. detect the presence of asbestos and asbestos-cement in the industrial area of Crotone and any effects that the presence of this material may have had in the waters and coastal sediments, 2. create a monitoring system for assessing the effects of infiltration into the groundwater component hydrosaline from nearby coastal areas, 3. develop modern treatment facilities and minimize the risk of contamination of coastal waters by the recovery and treatment of highly polluting and hazardous waste from aboard ship. As concerns the neutralization of asbestos and asbestos-cement, a pilot project based on innovative techniques of carbonation is going to be designed. Industrialization and dissemination of these plants will contain and gradually eliminate pollution of asbestos and asbestos-cement, which would decrease the number of individuals with illnesses closely derived from such pollution and thereby reduce health care costs related . Regarding the possible pollution in coastal marine sediments and by asbestos, processes reducing risks will be implemented, after having identified and analyzed their presence as well as standardized techniques for recovery and treatment of these pollutants in sediments. With reference to the implementation of the studies illustrated in paragraph 2 the research project has the goal to evaluate the interactions between marine and coastal environment through the analysis of some components and environmental factors that determine their impacts, particularly critical for the Calabrian coast. More precisely the phenomenon of salinisation of coastal aquifers and the resulting effect on land degradation and degenerative aspects of desertification. A series of survey methodologies, supplemented through the use of modeling based on GIS technology 2.0. specifically created for the project, will be used to better understand the dynamics of these phenomena. As concerns the last element analysis and R & D the proposing team aims to analyze and create an innovative treatment of dangerous and potentially infectious wastes such as, for example, special waste on board ships and those from restoration areas at risk of infection, in this case due to the Calabrian port areas of Gioia Tauro, Sybaris, and Cetraro. In this case, besides the study of methods and functional facilities to minimize the risk of contact between the waste and marine waters, the existing treatment technologies (high pressure systems and high temperature sterilization facilities gamma-ray systems, chemical treatment, etc.). will be also analyzed. The main goal is to identify the best strategies for removal or discharge of waste from commercial and tourist vessels and treatment of these highly polluting ground (bilge water, oily fractions mixed with sea water, food waste, waste from laundry These ships, medical, etc.).
