Description	The Research Project aims to define the use of biomass for the production of energy through new technological and scientific platforms allowing the exploitation of the algal lipids as oil and algal carbohydrates as substrates of fermentative processes to yield bio-gas, primarily bio-hydrogen. The biomass production is based on field cultivation of selected strains of microalgae, chiefly diatoms, and on the use of a new type of photobioreactors that allows both high production yield for surface and good photosynthetic efficiency, without expensive and delicate equipments, as proved by recent studies carried out by CNR-ICB and Sepe Costruzioni, both among the proponents of the present project. The scientific activity of SIBAFEQ is also focused on the development of a biotechnological fractionation of the above cited chemical components by oil accumulation as result of selective consumption of carbohydrates and proteins during anaerobic fermentation. Further goals of the project are the valorization of side processes of the algal cultivation and oil production, such as: (1) utilization of CO2 and reduction of NOx from the emissions of the bio-oil power plant of IGI (third partner of SIBAFEQ) in Palomonte and (2) exploitation of bio-silica recovered from the external structures (theca) of diatoms as solar photovoltaic material in photovoltaic cells by the R&D activity of ENERGHE (company of Ferrero Group and third partner of SIBAFEQ).
