Description In order to achieve the requirement of different applications, in terms of coverage and specific functionality to offer to the client, the strategic line followed by the leader company foresees the development of a radar family based on a common and modular architecture that starts by a product baseline, devoted to field applications and to sea traffic surveillance, evolves to achieve the requirements of a large applicative sector: transport and advanced logistic. Respect to the traditional radar solutions actually on the market, the radar product available to the proposer company and that is the starting baseline for the research activities foreseen in the project, uses a system architecture just thought taking into account the most modern radar technologies since characterized by a coherent receiving chain with an instantaneous wide band, by a solid state transmitter and by a programmable and flexible signal processing. Such architecture is mainly suitable for a tangible improvement of performances and functionalities respect to the original radar, by means the activities developed in the project coherently with the market demands. Recently new requirements for light coastal radar for sea traffic control, low cost surface monitoring radar for airport and on board radar for navigation emerged and these developments well fit in with this strategy for the industrial development. A crowing interest is observed for low radar market dedicated to the short range surveillance in the areas within the buildings and to the landslides monitoring on wide areas near roads, highways, bridges, railways; for these reasons also new scheduled developments of this kind of applications are involved in the project. In line with these new and emerging requirements, the project is divided into 5 work packages, in each of which the research activities address the requirements of different applicative environments. Nautical environment, where the activities are mainly addressed to the development of new solid state transmitting sources that allow to the new radar a major coverage and to the development of new techniques and technologies of generation and signal processing that allow a more accurate identification of both big and small, slow and fast boats present on the sea and the characteristics of the observed sea environment. Land environment, where the research activities will mainly focus on the wide band transmission and to the high resolution techniques to increase the radar capabilities to operate in the land environment where the main requirements are to recognize and do not confuse the slow and moving target with the different nature natural echoes (buildings, trees) present in and around the land transport infrastructure. Airport environment, where the research will address the study and development of new kind of radiating systems compatible with the receiving-transmitting device at circular polarization, in order to increase the observation capability in presence of rain, and that allow high spatial resolution and high rotation rate, and consequently radar data update. Sensors for infrastructure monitoring, where new techniques for the data processing and for formation of radar imaging based on models of electromagnetic inversion and for the hide objects identification will be developed. Sensors for environmental monitoring, where interferometric radar for the non-invasive monitoring and the measurements of movements due to landslides with millimetric accuracies will be studied and developed, as required for the monitoring of the transport structures and of their stability.
