Description	Floriculture industry ranks the second in Europe after the Dutch one, contributing for the 23% of the total production. It assumes big importance in the Southern Italy, in particular for pot plant production for green area management (“Mediterranean plants”). Due to the increasing internationalization, the floricultural nursery needs, more than the other sectors, productivity innovation. The aim of the project is to provide, through innovations of product and process, more sector competitiveness to meet the global market requirements. For the different products, the project is strictly correlated to the farmer needs to have always new products, getting resources from species not yet cultivated, with the necessity to find suitable protocol cultivation. The possibility of choosing – thousands of potential resources – imposes the definition of strategies and procedures to select in short time, the “plant resources” that need more commercial attention in order to reduce hazard and cost choice. The project refers also to the edible ornamental plants, an expansion sector in the way to have more incomes in a single floricultural nursery. This new product requires care and caution in cultivation process for hygienic-health characteristics. Regarding innovation process, the individuation of high quality and economic sustainable techniques is necessary (from environment safety to Tokyo Protocol) with the strategic Total Quality Management approach which is based on that quality is the expression of production and post-production process (environmental and hygienic-health troubles included). The project has so the following aims: - analysis of structural and organizational characteristics on Mediterranean plant sector; - individuation of product innovation through suitable protocol cultivation; - individuation of vegetable resources, mainly natives, for better represent new species and ornamental edible plants; - high level of territorial specificity; - improving of water and nutrient use efficiency in pot plant production; - sustainable methods against pathogens for pot plant production; - agricultural biomass valorisation and/or solid urban wastes for alternative plant substrate production; - definition of new kind of composting; - environmental evaluation of process production with LCA methodology (Life Cycle Assessment); - transfer of produced innovations to the other sector subjects; - planning of formation, updating, experience exchange, realized with producer and researcher participation. Strength points of the proposal are the involved farm characteristics, different qualification of research centres, interaction-integration of the aims that have to be developed, many subjects implicated and significant collaborations expected within the proposing subjects.
