The project is aimed to create and test an "Intelligent multi-role logistics integrator" (acronym PT2-LOG), able to manage and optimize logistics processes coming from land intermodal transport. The logistics system that will experienced by the rail operator, also project partner, will be conceived as an integrator of innovative and intelligent technologies in logistics, environment, science and security (relating both to people and goods).
The design will focus in particular on the transport of fresh and cold even garden products, as these require conditions and logistics processes particularly complex both concerning the maintenance of the cold chain and concerning the need to meet tight deadlines.
Resolving logistical issues, making it compatible with an efficient combined and economically viable land transport system, would, mainly, the effective use of the "intelligent logistics multi-role optimizer " for the organization and management of intermodal circuits calibrated on commodity products of low intensity dedicated logistics.
Analysis and studies have already shown the convenience inherent in transferring, through the development of combined transport by land, share of freight traffic, particularly on the way South-North, from rubber to rail modalities, with important environmental benefits in terms of CO2 emissions, benefits to the community compared to less congestion and wear of the road infrastructure, convenience to consumers thanks to effective savings in the cost of transportation service, potential earnings for production according to the available largest relative margin.
Anyway, there exist preconditions without which it is not possible to meet the necessary requirements to enable a cost sustainable intermodal transport service. They concern the study and implementation of a new organization of post-production logistics, the study of innovative information systems to manage it, the quality assurance of the logistics up to the recording in real time of the quality and traceability products during the transit. These requirements become even more challenging when they involve the activation of an intermodal transport service for the high-perishable goods, like fresh and cold products, concerning either the management aspects than the use of refrigerated cargo units, compatible with the needs and the limitations of the rail carrier.
