SIB: Soluzioni avanzate basate su biomateriali a matrici composite complesse per la riparazione e la rigenerazione della cartilagine articolare mediante tecniche mininvasive.

Code PON01_01287
Field/s Health and wellbeing
Description The project is focused on the latest trends of a rapidly growing market for the medium to long term. The world panorama of orthopedics devices see everywhere a significant growth in demand for products and techniques directed toward regenerative medicine and highly conservative surgery. This qualitative and quantitative evolution of the application is strengthened by its scientific and technical developments in the area of biomaterials. In this scenario, the aim of the project is research, development and validation of an innovative and integrated approach used to repair and regenerate articular cartilage through advanced biomaterials (hydrogels in complex matrices with specific characteristics), biopolymers and minimally invasive prosthesis. The basic objective of the system will be putting up a new system based on advanced biomaterials able to address the symptomatic treatment and therapy, to stop degeneration and possibly reverse the progress of disease of articular cartilage. The project includes 3 lines of research, divided into three main stages: LINE 1 Interpenetrating hydrogels divided into 8 stages LINE 2 Matrices and condroprotettive condroinduttive in biopolymer divided into 4 phases LINE 3 minimally invasive repair systems divided into 6 phases The research program will be held for more than 75% at the production site of Calatafimi Segesta (TP) and the remaining part at the headquarters of Villanova San Daniele (UD). The project involves the 'University of Palermo for the research and the education projects. The expected results take place on the edge of the state of the art because they allow the development of a new therapeutic approach that can provide the surgeon with a complete set of solutions for every stage of disease progression. Moreover any of these solution doesn’t exclude the others, allowing the physician to check the ongoing evolution of the disease and, if necessary ,to correct the therapeutic strategy. In particular: -For hydrogels is expected to reach an original compound with scheduled biological properties through the combination of gel created with the specific technology of Inter Penetrating hydrogels IPH, which will provide a new generation of hydrogels for biomedical applications and in particular those targeting treatment of cartilage diseases. -For biopolymers is expected to achieve effective compound to cover and regenerate articular cartilage defects by using cell-free systems with HA and serum, enriched with cells and growing factors that promote migration and differentiation of chondrogenic progenitor cells mesenchymal cells derived from bone marrow and thus the formation of cartilage repair tissue, -Systems for the repair of of large chondral and osteochondral damages (which does not allow a totally conservative approach to treat and regenerative) are expected to develop a press fit mini invasive prosthesis to be implanted after resection of small portions of highly degenerate tissue, allowing low invasiveness, and a conservative surgery. All approaches have in common the low invasiveness and a very conservative approach, respecting joint structures and surrounding tissues. This means reduced operating schedules, reduced bleeding which impact on accelerating recovery times and a reduced time-convalescence..These objectives represents not only an economic advantage for hospitals, but will also be feel as tangible innovation the patient, that will be subject to short hospitalization and will enjoy a rapid functional recovery.
