Description Typically, waveguides components are used in the microwaves and millimetric waves applications due to the high quality factors they permit to obtain. Furthermore, one of the keyword for the market is “integration” which, in some way, stands for “planar technology”: it is quite evident how the two needs are conflicting. In such a background makes its first appearance the idea of Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) components. Each waveguide is composed of a planar dielectric substrate comprised between two ground planes where the lateral walls presents two rows of plated holes. In practice, this permits to obtain guides (hence guides components) through a planar technology. Research and application of such a technology will permit to drastically reduce dimensions and costs, the latter of one order at least. The products that can be realised, range from filters, hybrids and “frequency-shaping” components, to antennas. SIW technology could also permit to economically produce expensive products such as either automotive or defence radars which requires a large quantity of sensors. Furthermore, in the market of civil telecommunication, it could be possible to replace the standard TV dishes with planar ranks of antennas which, tough their better performances, nowadays are not used due to their high cost. Ranks of SIW would be competitive and could have a wide spread; e.g. in Italy so far there are more than 10 million of TV dishes. The advantages which will drive people to opt for these new antennas lay on the their perfect integration in he urban environment; e.g. they can be installed on the roof as a VELUX window having comparable dimensions, or on the terrace wall as a sort of painting. Similar considerations can be made for microwaves components whose use will rapidly increase in the next years. Indeed, it seems realistic to foresee a market of about 150.000 antennas and 1.000.000 microwaves passive components at the end of the third year of activity. A strategic partnership, just like the one here proposed, will guarantee a rapid “time-to-market”. Indeed, in this project, the Politecnico di Bari will develop methodologies and project of components, whilst Somacis will produce prototypes. Important companies like Rheinmetall-Italia SpA and Alcatel Italia, which have already express their interest for this technology, will provide components specifications. The well known ability of Somacis to work in synergy with the Politecnico di Bari can guarantee the possibility of eroding market shares to the international competitors at the end of the project. Somacis, leader in the printed circuit boards production, is already equipped with the main technologies needed for the project implementation and it will only acquire competences and technologies useful for the maximization of the project success. Somacis will, therefore, enlarge its activity to the development of hi-tech components, strategic sectors where the Far-East competitors will never be able to and will never have to be dominant.
