Description Main scope of the PANDION project is to study innovative satellite functional modules integrated into sensorized deployable panels. In particular, the research activities will focus on the implementation of a photovoltaic unit constituted by holographic concentrators and of a high innovative thermal control system. The project has been conceived in order to optimize volume and costs of satellite payloads by means of innovative structural elements integrating some of the most important satellite functional units, such as power unit, attitude or thermal control systems. The research activity can be divided into three main macro-areas: 1. solar concentrators equipped with holographic focusing systems acting as passive solar trackers; 2. Ceramic biphase heat exchangers; 3. Deployable panels equipped with a thermo-mechanical monitoring system based on optical fibre sensors. A prototype integrating the three subsystems will be the final output of the research activity. The solar concentrators will be developed exploiting the potentialities of an innovative class of diffractive optical devices called Holographic Optical Elements (HOEs). Thanks to such devices, it will be possible to implement functionalities eitherwise impossible, at such level of compactness, with conventional optical elements. Regarding the development of a radiator embedding a two phase heat exchanger, the goal of the activity is to develop two different devices (Loop Heat Pipe-LHP and Grooved Heat Pipe – GHP) which will show the following innovative aspects: • an increase in thermal performance compared to the commercially available ones; • a strong decrease in manufacturing costs Regarding the deployable system, the activity will focus on the development of new generation deployable structures which will allow the opening and positioning of two panels located on different planes which are used as solar panel (solar panel with HOEs) and as radiator (embedded with LHP and GHP). Starting from the investigation on commercially available devices, a survey analysis will be performed to identify innovative solutions regarding components, structures, hinges and actuators.
