The process of progressive ICT technologies and services integration in all areas of social urban life is driving metropolitan environments towards “Smart City” scenarios, featuring a widespread availability of services addressed to citizens, which are able to simplify and speed up access and usability for a wide variety of information sources and applications, related to the use of public and social facilities which are thus made available through automated and highly integrated procedures, contributing to a sustainable economic development of urban areas. Support for such an application scenario must rely on an appropriate evolution of the telecommunications infrastructure, both for the TLC access, transport and management infrastructure, in order to guarantee performances exhibiting appropriate levels of flexibility, scalability and security, while keeping at the same time costs sustainable in economical and environmental terms, and for the middleware framework for homogenization of access and utilisation modalities for multimedia services. The solutions to be proposed will contemplate mechanisms and functionalities able to: support the progressive introduction, within the present network architecture, of new access, transport and management technologies, also comprising hybrid solutions; provide a traffic distribution structure which is scalable at the level of the metro network; monitoring and control functionalities not only in relation to new protocols, but also to the latest types of user services (instant messaging, VoIP, etc.) and network interactions (presence of new actors such as “virtual operators”, interworking between different technologies); ever more sophisticated security features, capable of protecting access to information and service utilization from the risks and threats typical of data networks based on the Internet model, guaranteeing in this way the desired levels of network reliability and user security. In such a perspective, the envisaged R&D activities will comprise: an innovative software platform for the development of the I/O module for radio control and switching nodes, which will be based on an “open source” technology and oriented to a flexible support of the node applications; new SW functionalities for the unified configuration management of control nodes for radio access; new core network functionalities for monitoring new and recently-spread IP-based communication services and network nodes dedicated to interoperability between different transport technologies (circuit/packet switching); solutions for microwave transport in the metro network in order to increase transmission capacity and optimize energy consumption; a new software middleware, placed between users and the application layer, for the automatic adaptation of content to user profiles and the different types of terminals, and analysis of user behaviours; security solutions able to guarantee increased levels of robustness and reliability for the network nodes dedicated to monitoring tasks, and capable of performing a dynamic analysis of information flows in order to identify possible alarm conditions for the network or the users and to propose corrective actions. The analysis, design and development of one or more applications typical of the “Smart City” environment will provide realistic use cases through which it will be possible to validate the effectiveness and validity of both system and technological solutions proposed during the research activity, evaluating then operational conditions similar to the real ones, in which the telecom infrastructure will function in the reference scenario. In this way, tools will be made available for a logic and functional verification of the innovative solutions proposed.
