Project

Attuatori meccatronici ad elevate prestazioni per applicazioni aeronautiche

Code PON01_02886
Field/s Transport and Logistics
Description Recent studies estimate a marked tendency to replace traditional hydraulic or pneumatic actuations with innovative electro-mechanical actuations. This technology tendency is in the box of "More Electric Aircraft" theme, this theme also involves avionics and power generation. From elevators or doors openings the trend is to replace the secondary and primary aircraft flight actuators. The research is full of studies on the implementation of electric flaps, slat, stabiliser, spoiler, wheel brake, aileron, rudder, landing gear for aircrafts and similar application for helicopters, however, such research has not yet led to products delivered to the market (except for wheel brake, stabiliser e spoiler applications) and stopped with pure concept demonstrators. About flight control the medium time interest is in secondary applications (flaps, slats, spoilers, stabilizer) and in primary command back-up unit (aileron, rudder and elevator). The total system (i.e. primary actuator and back-up actuator) will be possible only when millions of hours of operation will be accumulate without failure. That is when the electromechanical systems will be demonstrate reliability at least equal to the hydraulic systems. The dimensions and weights needed by aircraft applications require a big optimization effort to get the best performance in minimum weight and envelope. The integration of the different parts plays an indispensable role to achieve the requirements. The high reliability required for such systems shifts attention to electromechanical and to drives used for control the actuations. Crucial is also the ability of the system: electromechanical actuator and control (ie HW and SW) to assess faults and compensate these by a fully operational or partially degraded functioning, sufficient to safely complete the mission. These strategies: Fault-tolerant and fail-safe increase reliability and flight safety. Deepening the points described will set a new line of aircraft products based on the drivers and controllers of linear actuators (i.e. EMA), also called motorized ballscrews. The aim of this project will be to develop appropriate skills in Campania times a kind of technological innovation and create a unit for the production of components used by Umbra bearings. This assumption is the ability to channel the skills of Umbra and the University bell as actors of the project. Therefore, the project is structured into five greatest achievements summarized in the following points: 1. State of the art of mechatronic actuators with deep integration of mechanical, electric and electronic parts 2. Technologies and materials for high dynamics performance motors 3. Technologies, hardware and software for mechatronic actuators control 4. Sensors, diagnostics, and electromagnetic compatibility 5. Realization and characterization of experimental demonstrators. Umbra Cuscinetti already has the mechanical technology for these actuation systems: ball screws (VRS), bearings, gears. Regarding the VRS Umbra Cuscinetti is the absolute leader in the world for aircraft applications.
