Description The Calabria Region is characterized by a very high seismicity.In fact the Calabria-Peloritani Arc(CPA) represents one of the most active seismo-tectonic areas.In particular large earthquakes are originated in the Messina Straits Area.The CPA area was struck in the past centuries by numerous destructive and catastrophic seismic events. The most recent earthquakes occurred in 1783 when a seismic sequence damaged strongly Southern Calabria and also North-eastern Sicily therefore is possible that future events may cause severe damages to the large patrimony of public cultural monuments.The MASSIMO project propose to study and monitor the response of the different types of constructions to seismic stress by considering surface geology, topographic characteristics and elastic properties of soils in relation of the monument architectural and static preservation.The main goal of MASSIMO is to evaluate quantitatively the earthquake effects on specific sites which will be selected by a strict interaction with local Administrations interest. The project will combine a specific technological development to measure and monitor constructions/monuments and geophysical and geological setting of the area to improve the mitigation of seismic risk of the historical public goods.The results should furnish also guide lines to competent Institution and local Administration to plan consolidation actions and therefore prevention activity.The MASSIMO project will be organized in different activities which will start from the analysis of the state of the art on the Calabria Region which include the analysis of existent catalogues at National and Local level, in order to identify the architectural structures in three areas: Cosenza, Vibo Valentia and Reggio Calabria Province.Whereas it is need information will be integrated to permit the identification of the test sites to install the monitoring and analyzing systems.The selects test site will include at least three different construction types associated to the three main areas.The preliminary architectural constructions are:Architectural structures in Armed Cement in Reggio Calabria,Architectural structures in masonry in Vibo Valentia Monumental Architectural goods in CosenzaThe choice on the construction types and their geographical location on the territory should be considered as representative of the complex geographical-geophysical and historical-architectural situation. After architectural type selection and the geophysical analysis at different scales, system design and development phase will be started by integrating different instrumentation and monitoring techniques. The localized sensors will be installed following the indication of “Sovrintendenze” in order to evaluate the main dynamical features of selected buildings (such as eingenfrequencies, differential motions etc.). Information achieved will be correlated with the soil shaking features of the sites where such buildings are located in order to better assess the complex dynamics driving the soil-structure interaction. The soil shaking features will be assessed by further arrays of seismic stations (digitizers plus velocimeters and accelerometers) installed on the sites under study. The geometry of such arrays will be designed according to the geotechnical and geological conditions of the sites under study as well as considering the dynamical features of the buildings located on the sites themselves.The system will consider the following parts Instruments to measure parameters which describe the preservation of the monitored structure and the local soil deformations:Proximal remote sensing instruments(es. Laser scanner,thermal cameras,spectro-radiometer)Embedded instruments Seismometers(velocimeters and accelerometers plus digitizers)able to detect soil shaking in the frequency range of both seismological and seismic engineering interest.
