Description All the activities related to innovative technology and material included in the SMATI project aim to develop a new class of advanced materials, bulk and/or surface treated, in order to guarantee the resistance to heavy environment and wear. The development of these materials should be ob-tained combining research activities in the metallurgic and manufacturing fields. This new genera-tion of materials will lead the research institute and company involved in the project to a quantum leap in technology know-how. The main application for these materials will be in the fossil energy sources but also in all the other applications where the resistant to heavy environment is required, such as: - CO2 capturing and stocking - CO2 and/or H2S reinjection - Plants to transform waste in energy - Biomass combustion and treatments For all these items there is not a consolidated know-how and the proper materials selection. The aim of this project is to pull together, integrate and enhance multidisciplinary skills stemming from public and private research agencies, allowing to: - develop a new class of steels able to be employed in environment with H2S partial pressure greater than 1 bar; - develop a new class of wear resistant coating based on the plasma spray technology, opti-mized with particular requirements or based on thermosetting polymer base innovative material coatings that can offer elevated tribological performances together with flexibility to part ge-ometries using injection forming; - develop a new class of anticorrosion coating able to ensure a level of durability adequate for the service life of the target components in the relevant application; - offer specific competencies and formation for the product design and for the material and proc-ess qualification; - develop peculiar methods for the evaluation and the optimization of the process performance of the new developed material class with a specific focus for the foundry and machining tech-nologies. The proposed project shall comply with the general requirements coming from industrial con-straints, in particular: -safety requirements (impact resistant materials and components, work environments in produc-tion, fire-resistant materials and components, active systems, etc.). -requirements for long-term durability (lightness, durability, easy maintenance) -requirements of environmental compatibility (recyclable materials, reduction of noise and vibra-tion levels, manufacturing processes with reduced or zero emission, energy-saving production and management processes). -human-factor requirements concerning both employees and end-users (ergonomics, reduction of noise and vibration levels); -customer-oriented approach (methods and instruments aimed at developing an accurately tar-geted product).
