Project

STEM-STELO Sviluppo e messa a punto di sistemi e tecnologie per la realizzazione di macchine e per il miglioramento della logistica di progetto e dei trasporti eccezionali.

Code PON01_02380
Field/s Transport and Logistics
Description The project aims at the improvement of existing technologies in logistics and exceptional transport projects in order to generate a set of innovations that will impact products, processes and services of the applicant company. At the center of this set of innovations is the model of development through which the applicant creates its core business, in which the in-house engineering services play a central role for the competitiveness of the products offered and the quality and reliability of processes through which the products are obtained. The industrial strategy of the applicant is based on the ability to respond specifically to each customer, which has proved successful in offering competitive bids for all major exceptional transport and project logistics operations worldwide in recent years, and which requires a high level of engineering content to reduce costs by adopting optimised solutions in relation to the client’s demand. Moreover, this strategy requires a continuous effort geared towards increasing the technological added value needed to create and maintain a distinctive competitive advantage over the competitors; such strategy has essentially transformed the industry of project logistics and of exceptional transports in a highly technological and highly flexible one. Therefore, through this project, the applicant wants to stimulate the evolution of its engineering resources, while contributing with pertinent industrial research and experimental development, to the resolution of a series of technical problems that occurred during the past projects or that are envisaged to reoccur in the near future in the design and manufacturing of machinery and delivery of logistics services and exceptional transports offered by the company to its clients. In a word, these problems relate to: (1) materials technology for the structures of machines designed, built and used in connection with such services, (2) systems and procedures for the operation (including assembling and handling) of these machines; (3) models and methods for engineering. The first point can be read as the search for a set of process innovations, the second as product innovations and the third as service innovations. While in the short term the solution of these problems will lead to a competitive advantage over international competitors, in the medium and long term the methodological innovation of engineering services will help maintain this competitive advantage and enable the pursuit of the industrial strategy that, until now, they have helped in succeeding. In the field of materials technology and structures, there will be research and development efforts to allow: the use of titanium for steel structures, re-use (in condition of full safety) of cables for lifting, the use of plates as structural elements instead of the current seamless beams. With regard to product innovation, that can be obtained from the study of new ways of operating lifting machinery and from the new procedures that such systems entail, the research activity is expected to develop on three main fronts: systems and procedures for the assembling of the lifting machines (self-assembly), systems and procedures for the handling of assembled machines, tailing system. The research for new models and methods for engineering of the applicant is aimed at increasing its competitiveness, by enhancing the ability to: offer solutions, including new, optimized from time to time according to clients’ demand; anticipate and address the problems inherent in these solutions, scientifically assess the consequences; make decisions aimed at controlling the risk inherent in innovation; guiding managerial decisions on the basis of these results.
