Description This project is aimed at the achievement of Integrated agro-industrial chains with high energy efficiency for the development of eco-compatible processes of energy and biochemicals production from renewable sources and for the land valorisation, within a new model of less dissipative system economy. A model of energetically, economically and environmentally sustainable industrial development will be defined to optimize the energetic efficiency of agro-industrial system for obtaining of no-food biomasses to be used as raw-materials for industrial production of renewable energy and bio-chemicals and to contribute to re-launching of regional and national economy, integrated with environment and with productivity abilities of regional agriculture. In the project 2 agro-industrial chains (from oleaginous and lignocellulosic biomasses) will be studied to maximize the energetic efficiency, thanks to specific studies on production processes and byproducts valorization. Therefore, a variety of studies and investigations will be carried out on agronomic aspects for production of agricultural biomasses and on other techniques of biomass production (OR1); on processes for transformation of oleaginous biomasses (OR2) and for transformation of lignocellulosic biomasses (OR3 (OR4) and analyses on land use and energy efficiency and environmental/socio-economic impacts (OR5). The variety of expected results in terms of innovation, production and products will impact on: Agronomic sector (OR1), whose results will provide guidelines to the farmers to improve their profit by development of low input and energetically efficient agricultural techniques for valorization of marginal areas, which are not suitable for food agricultural productions. Innovation will be implemented by selection of new genotypes and sustainable cultivation processes in the current farming systems also by application of bioproducts developed by the project. Sector of biochemicals (OR2), which will provide to workers of biotechnogy and industry sectors innovations in the field of production of oils by yeasts (allowing building of a pilot plant for a yeast-based oil production system), and advanced technologies for the extraction and utilization of lipids from crop/microorganism/algal biomasses to obtain a variety of added value products (biochemicals). II generation Bio-ethanol sector (OR3) by developing new enzymes and a new biosytem for conversion of cellulosic biomasses into ethanol. High advancements achieved by research cooperation on the critical aspects of the production process and technological transfer from more advanced National areas will allow overcoming the current constraints– presently forbidding the industrial competitive development of ethanol production all around the world. The competitiveness of the entire production system will be improved by valorization of all the byproducts and production of new renewable products. The innovations achieved by the research activities in the above mentioned sectors will be functional to the development in the Campania Region (and scalable in other region) of processes for industrial production and recycling of materials such as bioplastics for domestic and agricultural uses, biochemicals and energy from residual biomasses and biodegradable products after their use (OR4) The implementation of these new production systems in the Campania region will be optimized through land analyses and environmental and socio-economic investigations in OR5 activities will provide to workers of the related industrial sectors and public administrators advanced innovative GIS tools to identify marginal areas suitable for the production of biomasses for energy production or industrial uses and to define the optimal logistics in order to minimize energy consumption and costs for transport. Socio-economic analyses and evaluations of energetic efficiency will provide validation of the new integrated agro-industrial system.
