Description The research project is aimed to develop innovative materials and technologies for soil and environmental protection. These topics are particularly important in the areas of the project, where the effects of hydro geological problems as well as of environmental degradation are more and more evident. Land protection topics: - Reinforced soil structures for landslides stabilization; - Reinforced protection bunds against rock fall and debris flow - Soil improvement by means of geosynthetic reinforced gravel and sand columns Environmental protection topics: - optimization of municipal waste pretreatment before landfilling in order to improve the mechanical characteristics of treated waste; - landfill leachate drainage and contaminated groundwater reclamation. In particular: - The research on reinforced soil structures aims to develop, by means of laboratory and full scale tests and by means of theoretical and numerical analyses, new materials for soil reinforcement (with a greater efficiency respect to the existing products) in seismic areas and the development of a new calculation code for the design of these structures according to the new current National Design Regulation (NTC/08). These results will make available new materials and new software to be used for the design of reinforced earth works in seismic areas and during operation. - The research on the reinforced bunds for protection against rock fall and debris flow aims to demonstrate, by in situ field tests and by laboratory and numerical analyses, the protection capacity of sheltering reinforced artificial embankments stressed by high energy impacts (higher than 6000 kJ) or by debris flows. The results could allow to define a new calculation methods for the design of these structures, that could be useful also for the protection against debris flow to protect inhabited areas. - The research activity on soil improvement by means of geosynthetic reinforced gravel and sand columns aims to develop, by laboratory models and in situ test fields, an alternative cheaper than the conventional pile foundations and, at the same time, aims to limit the difficulties connected with the construction of the traditional sand or gravel columns in soft cohesive ground presenting a limited lateral support for column stability. In particular the research is directed at developing a new geosynthetic for reinforcement and drainage to allow the use of reinforced columns also as vertical drain. - The research on pretreatment of municipal wastes prior to landfilling, now imposed by relevant environmental regulation, is directed to develop, by laboratory analyses, a new process technology to improve the mechanical characteristics of pretreated waste. This issue rises especially by the need to increase the storage volume of landfill in seismic areas, as the available techniques are providing pretreated wastes with poor mechanical characteristics that makes necessary the use of huge and expensive consolidation works, having a significant impact on the landfilling cost to be sustained by customers. - The research on treatment of contaminated groundwoters and on the landfill leachate drainage aims at develop, by laboratory and full scale tests, new permeable reactive granular mixtures with long term efficiency to be used in the above mentioned applications. In particular, a reactive landfill leachate drainage layer would allow to eliminate or to significantly reduce the dimensions of leachate treatment plants, moreover, the same or others mixtures could be successfully used for in situ groundwater remediation.
