The PaNREx project has the main objective of developing advanced ceramics materials and nano- structured ceramics and CNT array in order to manufacture packaging and to modernize the microwave microelectronics hybrids, and in particular, receivers and sources.
Receivers are microelectronic devices able to acquire the return signal (echo) coming from the ether, and to make available it for the following processing and elaboration phase, without to disturb the intrinsic information of the signal. The frequencies and powers to which the receivers are subordinates depend from the applications to which “the Radar is commissioned” therefore, in general terms, they can work within an extensive range of frequencies, and powers of the order of the tens of Watt. These devices are present in all the systems Radar of any application (earth, sea, air), and play always a fundamental role in phase of design, even if requirement demands differ based on the same application. In the event of avionic applications, beyond the characteristic electrical, the weight and compactness plays a fundamental role, so the employment of new nano- structured materials sure will contribute to the satisfaction of compactness requirement, fundamental characteristic in the avionic/space systems. In the Radars type AESA various receivers are present (one for every channel), for which increase compactness of the single receiver increase substantially the Radar compacteness.
The sources are microelectronic systems able to supply particular tones RF (coherently with signals RF transmitted /receipts), in order to converter RF signal in IF signal (or vice-versa) easy to transform it in a digital signal and processed by calculation systems. They are therefore present in all the systems Radar, and thus like the receivers, contribute heavy on the final performances of the entire system (in terms of resolution of elaborated signal, time of commutations of the work frequencies, etc). Currently the sources are little compact and heavy, for which obtaining an improvement from the point of view of the compactness, taking advantage of the nanostructured materials, it would be an advantage on any system Radar, and in particular on that avionic, and would consequently offer an advantage from the point of view of the Marketing.
The project shall develop several ceramic technologies of packaging, glues, materials able to supporting the emergent technology, which offers today high performance devices, like as an example ADC to elevated sampling frequency, that they allow to increment the compactness of the system: in the event specific the offer of the new technology allows of being able to design a receiver to single conversion, concurring a saving of costs, space, weight and an increment of the electrical performances. At the end of the plan we will have therefore of the devices as receivers and sources (present in any system Radars) much compact and to the state of the art, with of the characteristics of excellent heat conductivities that will lead on an improvement of the electrical performances, and on a saving in terms of design and realization of thermal management of the entire system radar. Moreover all the acquired technology could be used in other hybrids of microelectronics, thus increasing the benefits brought to the entire system.
The plan is introduced from the Selex Galileo SpA together to the following ones Co-proposing:
CNR DIP MOLECULAR PLANNING (IPCF/ME + ISMN/PA-RM)
University of the Studies of Messina
The project duration is 36 months and the activities shall be held in Sicily, in Palermo, Messina and in the Milano territory.
The project is made up of 5 work package which group the different techniques and technology aspects involved in the final research objective.
This project follow the Firm strategy roadmap and the goal is the enhancement of product portfolio within the compact solutions of the receivers and sources.
